March 14, 2018

Thank you for your continued leadership and your example in supporting the Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port & Navigation Engineers (ACOPNE) and our Board Certification Diplomate program.

Your ACOPNE Diplomate Board Certification is a testament to your continued effort, advocacy and leadership to advance the practices in our noble engineering profession.

Over the past year, the ACOPNE Board members, committees and staff have worked to increase the visibility of Board Certification for our ACOPNE Diplomates, through our various activities and participation at major engineering conferences.

For 2018, among our top priorities will be to continue to communicate the importance of board certification to employers of professional engineering and agencies responsible for the design, construction, and management of coastal, port, ocean & navigation infrastructure.

I see Board Certification of Civil Engineers in the specialties in which they practice as a key component in the ASCE Raise the Bar initiative, and we will be working with ASCE and CEC this year to incorporate specialty certification in the important raise the bar initiative. Later this year, we will also launch our first public elections for the ACOPNE Board of Trustees in 2018.

For now, we ask for your speedy action and response to get more engaged and involved with ACOPNE. We ask you to act on these requests for now!

  1. We have launched our ACOPNE LinkedIn company site. Please click on the link here and begin following our ACOPNE LinkedIn page.
  2. We are in the early stages of launching the ASCE Board Certified Diplomates Online Directory. This is an exciting and vital tool, where the engineering community and the public can search our Board Certified Diplomates, to seek for expertise in your area.  Please access the site and you may update your profile and update the privacy settings to your liking. To do this, simply click on the Help link at top of the page and set up your profile & privacy settings.
  3. We are asking for your input and feedback on testimonials on your achievement of the ACOPNE Board Certification. Have you or your firm benefited for consideration for engineering projects due to your ACOPNE Board Certification? Please let us know via email.
  4. This year, we will also launch the first open nominations process, for our Diplomates for service on the ACOPNE Board of Trustees.  All board-certified Diplomates in good standing and Distinguished Diplomates will be eligible to nominate to serve. Look for the announcement later this year!

Another top priority for us, is to ensure that Diplomates experience value in maintaining the highest standards of our profession including maintenance of board certification as a Diplomate. Please let us know how we are doing. You may send me an email at [email protected] or to our staff at [email protected].

Finally, I encourage you to recruit your well-qualified colleagues to apply to become Diplomates. We continue to encourage companies to promote board certification in career development plans and as a factor when weighing qualifications within procurement plans for professional engineering services.

On behalf of the ACOPNE Board of Trustees and staff, we thank you for your continued excellence and your leadership in the engineering profession!

Kind regards,

Andrew Cairns, P.E., D.PE, PMP, M.ASCE
ACOPNE President
