A joint venture made up of Shimmick Construction, FCC Construction S.A., and Impregilo S.p.A., was deemed "best value bidder" by a selection committee for a $649.5 million design-build contract to replace the Gerald Desmond Bridge in California. It is expected that Port authorities will recommend sending a "notice of intent" to award the contract on May 14. Doug Thiessen, a Diplomate of Port Engineering and managing director of engineering for the Port of Long Beach said, "It was critical that this contract deliver the best bridge at the most competitive price."
