ASCE has created the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge 3 (BOK3) Task Committee to update the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge (Second Edition). The committee will distribute a survey to seek feedback on the current edition and skill sets needed for the future. As a Diplomate, your input would be greatly appreciated. It is scheduled to be distributed to large groups of the ASCE membership on January 23 and will be open through the end of February.
The purpose of the Body of Knowledge is to define:
1. What are the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to enter into professional practice?
2. How can the Body of Knowledge be fulfilled by tomorrow's aspiring engineers?
3. Who should guide the learning of the engineering student and engineer intern?
In 2008, ASCE published the second edition of the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge (BOK2), which defines the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the future civil engineer for entry into the practice of engineering at the professional level, i.e., practice as a licensed professional engineer. This is consistent with and supportive of ASCE Policy Statement 465 (revised October, 2014).
One of the updates under discussion is whether to extend the BOK beyond professional licensure to board certification. The question is whether ASCE needs to update its BOK for the 21st Century to more strongly promote certification as a goal. The rationale is the practice would promote speciality certification in career plans, and as a factor when weighing qualifications within procurement plans for engineering services. This would also align the BOK with ASCE Guidelines for Engineering Grades and advanced credentials such as specialty certification at the Grade VI and VII levels.
The Body of Knowledge is a living document that will continue to be updated and revised. If recommended by the Task Committee, a third edition of the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century (BOK3) will be published by March 2019.
